Cascade County Sheriff’s Office Improves School Safety with Reserve Deputy Program
The Cascade County Sheriff’s Office is establishing a Paid Reserve Deputy Program to improve safety in our county schools. A Reserve Deputy – School Security Officer (Reserve Deputy) will work closely with school staff, students, and law enforcement to create a safe learning environment. The main job of this position is to protect students, staff, and visitors by maintaining a safe and orderly presence on school grounds. This is a sworn Deputy Sheriff position, which means the officer has the full authority under Montana law to enforce the law.
This position does not offer benefits, except for mandatory retirement contributions from the PERS/SRS retirement systems. However, all selected individuals will receive the necessary equipment to perform their duties and will have workers’ compensation insurance.
To apply, candidates must meet these requirements:
- Pass a physical and psychological exam from a licensed provider chosen by the CCSO before starting work.
- Have a High School Diploma, GED, or HSE.
- Live in Montana for at least one year before applying and live in the county for at least six months before the appointment.
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be a retired or former law enforcement officer, probation and parole officer, military service member, or have similar security or law enforcement experience.
- Hold a Montana Driver’s License with a good driving record.
- Have reliable transportation to work at the designated school.
- Complete a criminal history check and extensive background investigation.
- Show good moral character.
- Successfully finish an oral interview board.
- Be able to qualify with firearms under CCSO standards, which includes monthly inspections and qualifications.
Preferred qualifications include training in tactics, firearms, school safety, and active shooter response. Due to these responsibilities, it is important to have a high level of firearm proficiency. If these standards are not met, a Reserve Deputy may be terminated.
All parts of the hiring process, including the application, will be evaluated to rank and select potential employees. Finalists will interview with a selection board, and appointments require the Sheriff’s approval.
Reserve Deputies must be available to work every school day. Regular shifts will match the school schedule, but flexibility is needed for after-school events, board meetings, or emergencies. In the summer, Reserve Deputies may take part in firearms and active shooter training. There may also be extra shifts available for guarding inmates in hospitals or transporting prisoners, as long as these do not interfere with primary duties.
Reserve Deputies serve at the discretion of the Sheriff and can be terminated at any time by written notice from the Sheriff. Background check results can disqualify candidates from being hired as Reserve Deputies. Those with felony convictions, domestic violence convictions, or outstanding warrants are not eligible for employment with the CCSO.
